Setting Up Browser-Based Email

SendMyRooms normally sends emails for you, using Amazon SES or the SendMyRooms server. You can also choose Edit in Email App, which hands you the email content so you can review, edit and send it yourself.

If you use a browser-based email service (like Gmail or Outlook.com), you'll need to configure both:

  • Your SendMyRooms settings
  • Your web browser

If you use a desktop email application instead, setup is much simpler — see below.

SendMyRooms Settings
  1. Open the SendMyRooms Management Area.
  2. Go to Settings.
  3. Under Email App Type, choose:
    • Browser-based with HTML, or
    • Browser-based without HTML

Some browser email systems support formatted HTML — if yours does, choose Browser-based with HTML. If not, choose Browser-based without HTML, which sends plain text. Note: Gmail does not support injected HTML formatting. Test links are provided at the end of this page so you can confirm your choice once your browser is set up.

Desktop Email Applications (Optional)

Using a desktop email app instead of a browser?

  • Select Desktop App with HTML or Desktop App without HTML, depending on what your email app accepts.

That's it — no browser setup needed.

How Browser-Based Email Works

When you choose Edit in Email App with a browser-based option:

  • SendMyRooms opens a new browser tab using a mailto: command.
  • If your browser is set up correctly, a new email opens with the message already filled in.

Formatting depends on your chosen option:

  • With HTML → formatted email with links
  • Without HTML → plain text email
Configuring Your Browser

Most browsers need to be told how to handle mailto: links. Follow the steps for your browser below.

Chrome (Mac or Windows)
  1. Open gmail.com and sign in
  2. Click the handler icon at the right end of the address bar
  3. Select Allow Gmail
  4. Test your browser (see Testing Your Browser below)
Firefox (Mac)
  1. Open Preferences
  2. Select Applications
  3. Find mailto under Content Type
  4. Choose Use Gmail
  5. Test your browser
Safari (Mac)

If you're on macOS 10.12 (Sierra) or newer with Safari 12+:

  1. Purchase Open In Webmail from the Mac App Store
  2. Open Apple Mail → Preferences → General
  3. Set Default email reader to Open in Webmail.app
  4. Open Open in Webmail.app from your Applications folder and select your email service
  5. Test your browser
Firefox (Windows)
  1. Open Options
  2. Go to Applications
  3. Find mailto under Content Type
  4. Select Use Googlemail
  5. Test your browser
Microsoft Edge (Windows)

Edge doesn't directly support mailto: handling for webmail. Workaround:

  1. Go to Start → Settings → Default Apps
  2. Set Google Chrome as the default app for Email
  3. Test your browser
Testing Your Browser

Once set up, use the test links below to check everything's working. A new email should open addressed to somename@gmail.com.

  • Test with HTML content

  • Test with plain text content

  • HTML emails should appear neatly formatted (including bold text)

  • Plain text emails will appear unformatted

If the test links don't work, JavaScript may be disabled in your browser — it's required for SendMyRooms.

The non-JavaScript links below open in the same tab and let you verify your mailto: settings without it.
