Using Templates to quickly show Non-Standard Crops

If you wish to regularly display images at an actual size with a non-standard cropping aspect ratio (eg 12x20), the normal approach is to add this size to your Print Paper Sizes. If the image has not been cropped, it will be automatically centered within that size when you switch to Select Size view. To adjust the cropping you need to switch to cropping view and manually crop the image to the same ratio.

An alternative method is to create a template with one opening designed to the same crop ratio that you wish to display. (You could also make the template's overall size exactly the same size as the opening so no "mat" is shown around the image). And optionally set it to be a "Fixed Size" template.

Then to show the image:

(a) Switch to Working with Layouts.

(b) Double-click on that template to create a new layout.

(c) Drag and drop your image into the layout's opening - it will be displayed cropped within the opening.

(d) To adjust its cropping position, switch to Cropping View and drag it around (or hold the Alt/Option key down and drag in Show Layouts view). In Cropping View, you can also Crop In/Out.

(e) Switch to Select Size View to display at actual size (Note: if you haven't set the template to be a "Fixed Size", then remember to have the print paper size available for selection).

If you then order the layout as a Traditional Matted Layout at the size you want, then the High-Res Production module will create the print file cropped to that size.
