Could not find Network Server message

If you have previously setup ProSelect to use the ProSelect network server and you are suddenly getting this message when you startup ProSelect then it is likely that the ProSelect Network server is not running or something has changed in your network setup.

First check that the ProSelect Network Server is running on the computer that you have installed it in. If not, close ProSelect, start the server and start ProSelect again.

If the server is running then you should check if the network connection from ProSelect to the server is working OK. To do this:

  1. Go to the computer running the ProSelect Network server and copy down the IP address of the server. This is the number in the next to Address in the left hand server status box. It will be something like "192.168.0.200"
  2. Open ProSelect's Preferences -> General Settings -> Sharing (this has changed as of ProSelect 2012r1 and newer)
  3. Click the Setup Server button
  4. Check that the IP address of the server matches the one previously saved in ProSelect (if this has changed see below).
  5. Enter the Server's IP Address in the top box and click the Search button.

ProSelect Network Server was found

If the message appears that says "ProSelect Network Server was found"  AND the Server IP address did not change then you have entered the correct number and ProSelect is able to communication with the server. Click the OK button, Save the Preferences, Close and then re-open ProSelect and it should connect fine.

ProSelect Network Server was not found

If the message appears that says "ProSelect Network Server was found" then it means that ProSelect is unable to connect to the server and you will need to check the following items below to work out why.

ProSelect Network Server is setup to work with a different version of ProSelect

See the article "ProSelect not connecting to the ProSelect Network Server".

ProSelect Network Server IP address is changing

ProSelect remembers where the Network Server is located by the Server's IP address. If this changes, then ProSelect may not be able to find it unless you set it up again in ProSelect's Preferences.  If you are finding that the  Server's IP address is changing (this can happen after a re-start of the computer that it is running on or re-configuring the network setting on that machine) then get someone to show you how to setup that machine with a fixed IP address.

Windows Firewall

If you are using a Windows computer, then windows could be blocking network connections between the two programs.

To check this, you need to do the following on any computer which is running either ProSelect or the ProSelect Network server:

  1. Open the Control Panel
  2. Select Windows Firewall
  3. Under the "Allow programs to communicate thorugh Windows Firewall" (exceptions tab in XP), make sure ProSelect and the ProSelect Network Server is checked.
  4. Click the OK button.

Notes:
There are lots of possible settings in this settings area, so other changes may be required as well. If it still doesn't work, try turning the firewall off temporarily (under the General Tab in XP) to see if the firewall is the cause of the problem.

Other Anti-virus/firewall software blocking network activity

Some third party anti-virus software packages also include a "firewall" feature. If you are using any of these, you may also need to disable that feature (or set them to allow ProSelect and the ProSelect Network Server).

Computers with more than one network connection port (Macs and Windows PC's)

If  the computer  that you are running the ProSelect Network Server on has more that one network port then the ProSelect Network Server may "bind" to the wrong one and, as a result, any copies of ProSelect connected to the other network won't be able to find the server. You can usually tell if this is the problem by looking at the first three sets of numbers in the IP address for your computer compared to  the IP address for the Server. They should be the same.

For example:

ProSelect Computer IP address:  192.168.100.102   and ProSelect Network Server IP Address: 192.168.100.200 should work fine

ProSelect Computer IP address:  192.168.100.102   and ProSelect Network Server IP Address: 192.168.255.200 will not connect.

If you find your setup is like the second case above and you have downloaded ProSelect Network Server version 1.0b11 or later, you can use the Preferences Window in the ProSelect Network Server software to select to "bind" the Server to a different network port. In the drop down list, you can check all of the available networks and select the one which most closely matches the IP address of the machines that you are running ProSelect on.

IMPORTANT: After making this change, you need to stop and re-start the server (use the Stop/Start button) for any changes to take effect.

If some of the computers in your network have very different IP addresses then you may need to get a network technician to re-arrange your network in order to have all machines able to connect to the ProSelect Network server.

Checking the Server Activity log

On the ProSelect Network Server you can click the Show Activity button to open a window that shows recent operations between each copy of ProSelect and the Server. You will see the time of the connection, the name of the computer that connected, its IP address, the version of ProSelect that it is running, the operation requested and the result.

If you see the version number in red color then it means that the version of ProSelect trying to connect is a different version to that which the Server is setup to allow to connect. This setting is controlled in the ProSelect Version section in top right of the main window on the Server.

If you see a Failed:2 result, it means that the Server is not able to write any data to the computer that it is running on. The latter error can be caused by the ProSelect Network Server not running with Administrator Privileges or the folder that it saves data to is set to be read only (see the ProSelect Reference Manual's ProSelect Network Server section for details of the location of this folder).

Check the Network Server setting

Check the Network Server setting is correctly set to your installed  version of ProSelect "Only allow connections from: "Version xxxx" (menu drop down). xxxx being your version of ProSelect installed on your computer(s). Note: These ProSelect installations should be the exact same version.

Other things to check

Apart from the above, you can also check the other suggestions on the ProSelect Reference Manual's ProSelect Network Server section - "Cannot Locate the Network Server - Troubleshooting".
