Controlling audio output when using a HDMI connection

FaceBook Community Question: "I have my laptop set to extended display, but that also takes whatever audio my laptop's playing and channels it through the projector. Is there a way to keep audio playing through the laptop with only the visual screen itself extended?

On OSX, you can change the output sound through System Preferences -> Sound, after plugging in your HDMI cable.

On Windows 7 and up, you should be able to set the default sound from either "Control panel -> Sound" or right click the sound icon on the task bar and then click "Playback Devices". All devices should be listed under the playback tab. From there you can select the device and click the "Set Default" button. This will only work if Windows lists the HDMI as a valid playback device.
