Getting your Orders to your Lab

ProSelect comes in two versions. Standard and Pro. One of the major features of ProSelect Pro is the Hi-Res Production module which takes the orders that you have recorded in ProSelect (and any books that you have designed) and automates Photoshop to produce final images assembled (in the case of composites), sized and cropped and ready to be sent to the lab for printing.

Output file format

In the ProSelect's Hi-Res Production Preferences, you can setup the output DPI required by your lab as well as the preferred file format. Possible file formats include:

  • JPEG
  • Flattened TIFF
  • Layered Photoshop files

Output File Naming

In the Hi-Res Production Preferences you can control how the output files are named. These include:

  • the maximum length of the file name (long names will be truncated)
  • whether to include the print size in the file name eg Image002-5_0x7_0.jpg
  • whether to include the number of prints requried in the file name eg Image002-5_0x7_0-Q07.jpg

You can also select to have the same sized files placed together in subfolders for each size.

If your lab includes an order submission system like ROES then this file naming/grouping sytem makes it easy to submit your order. See this article to more information on working with ROES.

Production Report

ProSelect can also produce an optional Production Report containing everything about the job that you have just completed including print order specifications as well as template & page construction information.  This makes ordering very easy because you don't have to type in your order details when sending the order to the lab.

You can selected the Production Report format in the Hi-Res Production Preferences and have the report automatically updated every time Hi-Res Production is run (as of v2012r2 and newer), or you can click the Output Report button in the Hi-Res Production window to save the report. The report is saved into the Output Folder Location that you have setup as the rest of your images.

More on Production Reports can be found in the article "Labs using the Production Report?, or on the "Production Reports" page in the ProSelect Reference Manual (quick access uder the Help menu in ProSelect). The page in pre-v2012r2 manuals is "Hi-Res Production Setup III".

Mat Cutter Convertor

There is also a Mat Cutter Convertor program that Labs and Album Suppliers can use which reads ProSelect's Production Report (.xml) and converts the data into commands for mat cutting machines.

Workflow Considerations

ProSelect's workflow was designed to allow photographers to carry out any image re-touching required before Hi-Res Production is run. This process means that you only need to re-touch the original image once and that one re-touched image is then incorporated into multiple products during production. (There are some tutorial movies on our Demos page that show this process.)

If you are getting a third party to do your re-touching then you have a number of options:

1. The best way is to provide the re-touching service with your ProSelect album file and the original images that are required. If they have ProSelect then they can easily use the re-touching workflow described above. ProSelect includes functions that allow you to move or copy all ordered original images (and images used in a book) into a separate folder so you can easily collect together the required files for sending to your re-toucher. These functions are under the Album Menu -> Original Images.

2. If you are producing composite images, you can run Hi-Res Production with your output format as a layered Photoshop file. This way, each image in the composite will be on its own layer and can be easily selected and separately re-touched.
