ProSelect and Photoshop CS5

Updated November 2010, July 2011 & February 2013

February 2013 - Mountain Lion

Due to changes in Mac's Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8), we have had to make changes in ProSelect v2012r2.1 or newer to avoid intermittent lockup problems with Photoshop. Please see the  article "ProSelect on Mountain Lion" for more on this.

Original article

Photoshop CS5 has been released and we understand that the Mac version required a fairly major re-write in order to be able to run as a 64 bit application.

Unfortunately, this broke nearly all of the functions in ProSelect that interacted with Photoshop CS5. These functions included:

  1. Opening Original Images in Photoshop
  2. Opening Raw Images in Photoshop
  3. Reloading Photoshop's Action list (in ProSelect's Preferences)
  4. Applying Custom Actions
  5. Running Hi-Res Production

As a result,  we have had to make a number of changes to ProSelect in order to  make it work with both the new CS5 release as well as with the earlier versions of Photoshop.

We have tested these changes under Snow Leopard (Mac OSX 10.6.3) using both the 64 bit and 32 bit "modes" of Photoshop CS5 and all functions appear to be now working correctly. We have also tested these changes by running ProSelect with Photoshop CS3. We expect that the other older versions of Photoshop will continue to work fine as well.

Make sure that you have updated Photoshop to version 12.0.1 or later.  Make sure that you double-check the version number because, the last time we looked, Adobe still had the old version (12.0.0) on their downloads page and you needed to run the software updater to get the fix.

An added benefit of these changes is that now Photoshop will automatically launch if it is not already running on Macs.

Release v2011r1.11 available

These changes have been incorporated into ProSelect 2011r1.11 and newer (available from the ProSelect Downloads area).

If you are using CS5 on a Mac with Snow Leopard, then you should download ProSelect  2011r1.11 or newer. Note: Please read the important notes on the downloads page regarding the requirement for a new registration key in 2011r1.x and newer.

Continuing problems with CS5 under Leopard (10.5)

During our testing process we did find that Photoshop CS5 behaved very erratically when running scripts (including ones started outside of ProSelect) on our test machine running Leopard (10.5.8).   So until Adobe releases an update which fixes these issues, we are recommending that you should NOT use CS5 with ProSelect on Leopard - only with Snow Leopard or newer.

ProSelect 2011r1.x and newer will tell you about this problem and not attempt to connect to Photoshop CS5 if you are running under Leopard.

CS5 on Windows

(May 5th 2010)

We have not yet tested CS5 with ProSelect on Windows. However, no one has reported any problems so, unless we hear otherwise,  we are assuming that this is working OK. We will be doing some testing ourselves over the next week and will update this article with the findings.
